Chancellor's Message: Statement on War in Ukraine

Written By: Terisa Riley

Good morning, Lions:

You have received many messages from me this week about the inclement weather we are experiencing in western Arkansas. As I have been glued to the news stations—online and on television—my attention has been torn between our weather and the crisis in Ukraine as Russians invade and overtake areas of the country. This situation is deeply troubling, and I work in solidarity with those who oppose this needless violence.

My thoughts are consumed with prayers for the families of our employees and students. The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith does not have any students or employees from Ukraine, nor do we have anyone currently studying or working in Ukraine; however, I am certain some of you have family members and friends who reside in eastern Europe. I can only imagine the fear they have that this invasion will have a devastating impact on their home countries and fear about the safety of their relatives in the region.

If you need support, I encourage you to utilize the resources available to you on our campus:

Student Counseling Center:

Although walk-ins are accepted when the campus operations are open, we recommend calling in advance to make an appointment. Please call our office, which is located in Room 129 of the Pendergraft Health Sciences Building, at 479-788-7398.

Counseling Center Hours: Monday - Thursday: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Friday: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

If you are in an after-hours emergency please call the 24-hour hotline at 1-800-542-1031. We also offer an after-hours non-crisis Warmline, which is answered locally, at 479-452-6655.
