Gettin' Shrimpy With It

Written By: Ian Silvester

Come one, come all! The Roarin’ on the River rolls back to the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith as the annual tradition celebrates recent graduates and the start of summer.

It’s okay to be ‘shellfish’ at the all-you-can-eat Lowcountry shrimp boil. See’s Seafood of Fort Smith will be dishing out heaping portions of boiled shrimp, andouille sausage, corn-on-the-cob, potatoes, and KJ’s famous Chicken Jambalaya will be available.

Jasmine Smith, director of Alumni Engagement & Annual Giving, says the Alumni presenting sponsor, Mercy, helped make the Saturday, June 10, event possible. “They have supported us all year, and I’m excited for another event with them.”

The traditional Southern feast isn’t complete without live music from AV alum Jon Dooly, corn hole, and adult beverages. The newest grads, spring class of 2023 and fall of 2022, are eligible for a special, recent alumni discounted rate. However, all Lions are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Individual tickets can be purchased for $50 or $75 per couple. New alumni tickets are $40 and $60, respectively. Tables are also available.

All proceeds from the popular event go to the Alumni Legacy Scholarship Endowment. During the 2022-2023 academic year, ten $1,000 scholarships were awarded to deserving legacy students whose family member graduated from Fort Smith Junior College, Westark, and AV.

“This event is one of my favorites,” exclaimed Smith. “I love the fun and casual atmosphere, seeing the alumni back on campus, and seeing the impact our Alumni Advisory Council makes on our scholarship.”

Reserve your and don’t miss the best shrimp boil west of the Mississippi, incredible live music, fun and games, and a chance to visit your favorite friends and Lions.

Landmark CPAs is this year’s cornhole sponsor. Burford’s is the beverage sponsor.
