AV Student Research Symposium Winners Announced

On April 7, 2023, nearly 100 University of Arkansas – Fort Smith students presented various research projects at the 16th Annual Student Research Symposium. Of the individuals and teams who presented, 15 were recently announced as the best research presentations.
 
The symposium featured oral and poster presentations judged and shared among fellow AV students. Several areas of study were represented, including biology, business, chemistry, computer science, dental hygiene, electronics, engineering, geoscience, marketing, mathematics, media communications, psychology, and more.
 
Monetary awards were given to 31 students composed of team and individual presentations selected by the judges.
 
The winners are:
 
“Autonomous Vehicle Challenge” 
 
Presented by the team of Daniel Balmaceda and Julia Thai of Fort Smith, Chaarlee Hickman of Mountainburg, and Cody Merrell and Devin Yocum of Van Buren. The team’s faculty sponsor was Dr. Kevin Lewelling.



“Can You Hear Me: An Overview of the Risk of Hearing Loss for the Dental Profession”
 
Presented by the team of Kevin Villeda of De Queen, Jacob Marin and Alissa Wagner of Fort Smith, and Kenzie Gonzales of Greenwood. The team’s faculty sponsor was Roxy Reed.



“Citizen Science: Role of iNaturalist in Biodiversity Documentation and Education in Arkansas”
 
Presented by Kelsie Baker of Ozark, through the support of faculty sponsor Dr. Ragupathy Kannan.



“Cross-Cultural Color Theory”
 
Presented by Matti Youngblood of Fort Smith, through the support of faculty sponsor Dr. Lynda McClellan.



“Determining the Impact of a Flocculant or Surfactant on Microplastic Recovery”
 
Presented by the team of Jon Turco of Fort Smith and Matthew Neal of Van Buren. The team’s faculty sponsors were Dr. Maurice Testa and Dr. Jordan Mader.



“Expression Level, Codon Composition, and Mutation Rate”
 
Presented by the team of Anabelle Bruning of Fort Smith, Austyn Russell of Gravette, and Karen Garduza of Nashville. The team’s faculty sponsor was Dr. David McClellan.



“Fake Review Identification Using Deep Learning”
 
Presented by the team of Coby Mizell of Barling, Tahlia Bergeron of Fayetteville, and Carter Freeze of Fort Smith. The team’s faculty sponsors were Andrew Mackey and Israel Cuevas.



“Grant Grabbers for Community Park”
 
Presented by the team of Anthony Tramonte of Elkins, Tara McKinney of Fort Smith, and Connor Ware of Rogers. The team’s faculty sponsor was Dr. Kristin Tardif.



“I Know What You Are: Meyer and the Misappropriation of the Quileute Tribe”
 
Presented by Avreigh Watson of Rogers, through the support of faculty sponsor Dr. Laura Witherington.



“If This Land Could Speak: A Brief Introduction into the Indigenous History Linked to Fort Smith”
 
Presented by Korina Lopez of Elkins, through the support of faculty sponsor Tom Wing.



“On the Exploration of Psychosomatic Phenomena”
 
Presented by Michael Dunham of Greenwood, through the support of faculty sponsor Dr. David McClellan.



“Project Barduino”
 
Presented by Courtney Edmonds of Fort Smith, through the support of faculty sponsor Dr. Kiyun Han.



“The Silver Bullet”
 
Presented by the team of Brooke Johnson of Barling, Chloe Ezell of Cabot, and Paola Cury Fragalle of Sao Carlos, Brazil. The team’s faculty sponsor was Dr. Kristin Tardif.



“The Whimsical Domestic Fairy and Expressive Masculine Individual: Gender Roles, Ages, and Class in Jane Eyre”
 
Presented by Gabriella Stokes of Ozark, through the support of faculty sponsor Dr. Lindsy Lawrence.
