The AV Political Science Department will host a workshop titled “So You Want to Get Elected” Jan. 24-25 at The Blue Lion at AV Downtown, with a registration deadline of Jan. 10.

 

The one-and-a-half day seminar will run from 12:30-5:00 p.m. Jan. 24 and 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Jan. 25 and will examine the theoretical basis and practical applications of winning campaigns on any level.

 

Politicians, pundits and others involved in the political sphere will give presentations covering several topics, including campaign and issues management, get-out-the-vote methods, media relations, financing a campaign and advertising strategies.

 

Speakers include Shane Broadway, director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education in Little Rock and former state senator and Speaker of the Arkansas House of Representatives; Ark. Sen. Joyce Elliott of Little Rock; Williams Yamkam, assistant professor of Political Science at AV in Fort Smith; Clint Reed, partner at Impact Management Group in Little Rock; Ernest and Zoe Oakleaf, founders of Opinion Research Associates in Little Rock; Robbyn Tumey, president and CEO of First Rogers Group in Rogers; Evan Tanner, associate with Markham Group in Little Rock; Ryan James, associate with Paynal Consulting in Little Rock; Jeff Arnold, reporter with Times Record in Fort Smith; Chip Paris, director of client services at Williams/Crawford & Associates; Michael Tilley, president and managing editor of The City Wire in Fort Smith; Kyle Kellams, news director and Ozarks at Large producer at KUAF in Fayetteville; Candace Martin of Little Rock, executive director of the Democratic Party of Arkansas; Larry Henry, managing editor of KSFM in Fort Smith; a fundraising consultant; and a representative of the state Republican party.

 

Robert Willoughby of Fort Smith, chair of the political science department at AV, said this was the first in a series of workshops the department would be hosting.

 

“This will be one of many workshops that are open to the public on a range of political topics and issues facing the people of Arkansas and the United States,” he said. “Our speakers are drawn from a wide variety of current and past office holders, political consultants and University faculty.”

 

The fee for the event is $125, which covers meals, materials and a social mixer.
