The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith jazz band will perform a concert featuring a variety of music at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 as part of the university’s Season of Entertainment 36.

 

The AV Jazz Band and Jazz Catz will perform the concert at the ArcBest Corporation Performing Arts Center in the Fort Smith Convention Center, located at 55 South 7th St. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased through the AV Box Office at 479-788-7300 or by visiting .

 

Dr. Christopher Barrick, head of the Department of Music and Theatre and director of the Jazz Band, said the band will perform a mix of jazz selections from traditional swing to modern and funk styles featuring the work of artists from Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Michael Buble and more.

 

The concert will also feature the university’s new music education professor, Dr. Scott Tomlison, be a guest director on “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” by the Buddy Rich Band. Ginny Hudson, instructor of flute, will also perform a contemporary arrangement of “Heart and Soul.”

 

The Jazz Catz is under the direction of Don Bailey, AV director of jazz studies.

 

“The catz and jazz band always bring passion and excellence to the stage,” Bailey said. “A common reaction from folks in the crowd is, ‘wow your students are so exciting to watch. That was definitely a fun show.’”

Greenwood: Dakota Archer, Skyler Heffner, Alex Marrin, Emily Smith and Crystal Williams.

 

Mulberry: Ginger Jones.

 

Omaha: Deborah Ellis.

 

Pocola, Okla.: James Eaton.

 

Poteau, Okla.: William Newby.

 

Rogers: Brandi Cappello.

 

Roland, Okla.: Aleyah Youngblood.

 

Van Buren: Michaela Cooper, Kennon Doss, James Patrick Martin, John Montgomery and Jensen Smith.

 

Villa, Mexico: Zabdiel Montes.

 

The concert is part of Season of Entertainment 36, a yearlong lineup of entertainment sponsored by the AV featuring a variety of plays, musicals and symphonic performances.
